Mussels inhabit rocky coasts in the intertidal region and can be found at depths of up to ten meters. They live attached to rocks by means of a very resistant filamentous structure – the byssus – forming dense colonies. They are important sources of calcium, iron and zinc, essential in the growth and strengthening of bones and teeth. They are also essential for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The inspected mollusks are proven to have come from locations free of pollution and red tides.
